Over 2,000 mining and related licenses issued since 2017

Ghana has issued 2,250 mining licenses since 1988, with a significant surge from 2017 to 2025, totaling 2,151 licenses.

Currently, 2,202 of these licenses are active, while 18 are suspended and 29 are under review.

The peak year for licenses was 2020, with 824 issued, followed by 614 in 2024.

A record 330 licenses were issued in a single day on January 1, 2024, reflecting a rapid increase in mining activities amid ongoing concerns about illegal mining (galamsey) in the country.
