Edward Karaweh, General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union (GAWU), has emphasized that tackling illegal mining (galamsey) is crucial for Ghana's agricultural future.
Speaking on Joy News' PM Express, Karaweh linked illegal mining to severe land degradation and its exacerbation of climate change effects, which have disrupted expected reductions in food prices due to inconsistent rainfall.
He criticized political parties for lacking concrete plans to combat galamsey and warned that continued land destruction would hinder agricultural development and irrigation efforts.
Karaweh urged for immediate action to address these challenges to secure Ghana’s agricultural sector and future.
