Dr Valerie Sawyerr of the main opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has said the decrepit manner in which the Asomdwee Park, the final resting place of Ghana’s late President, Prof John Atta Mills, has been left, speaks to the indiscipline that has engulfed the nation under the presidency of Nana Akufo-Addo.
Recent media reports said the tomb had been taken over by weeds and also become the lair for prostitutes and marijuana smokers.
Dr Sawyerr, who is served under the Mahama administration as a Senior Policy Adviser to the President and Head of Presidential Delivery Unit, wrote on social media that: “How much does it take to maintain the Asomdwee Park where President Atta Mills was buried?”
“It is a state burial ground, not a private burial ground”, she reminded, adding: “The Department of Parks & Gardens can easily add it to their maintenance portfolio.”
“If the government is no longer prepared to take care of Asomdwee Park, may I suggest it officially hands over maintenance of the park to the NDC Party”, she proposed.
“I am sure we can pay some workers to weed and tidy the place once a week. I am also sure we can find a security man to secure the place so we do not hear the rumours that wee smokers are puffing out smoke on Atta Mills' tomb”, Dr Sawyerr suggested.
“Why this breakdown of discipline, law and order under the watch of President Akufo-Addo please?”
