Release report on ‘murder of Zongo 7’ - Family

The Family of Maryamiya in Kumasi whose son Abdul Hannan Bashir, one of the seven (7) Zongo youth brutally murdered by the police months ago at Manso Nkwanta in the Ashanti Region is calling on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to immediately order the release of the committee report surrounding the unfortunate incident.

They are particularly interested in recommendations made by the investigative committee that was tasked to look into the incident after their relative was mistaken for an armed robber and shot to death.

It would be recalled that all seven were allegedly mistaken by the police for members of an eight-man armed robbery gang who had earlier attacked a sprinter bus and shot dead a police officer at Ayirebikrom near Manso Nkwanta in the Amasie West District of the region.

The Ashanti regional police command said the seven were killed in a shootout a claim that has been disputed by families of the deceased persons.

They were alleged to have opened fire on the police when they attempted to attack a Chinese national.

The Independent Committee that investigated the killing of seven Zongo youth at Asawase in the Ashanti Region, presented its report to Vice-President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia on Wednesday, 26 September 2018.

The vice-president’s office has also forwarded the report to the Attorney General’s office for the necessary steps to be taken.

The government set up the committee after the police and families of the deceased gave different versions of the circumstances that led to the killings.

However, the cousin for Hannan, Ahmed Salim Yushau in a statement said the heart of the bereaved family cannot go to rest with the nightmarish thought of allegation of armed robbery leveled against their innocent relative and promising son who was killed in that terror attack and horror fiction by the police.

“Considering our view of sheer level of Anger, selective justice and lack of remorse on the part of those who perpetrated such heinous crime, dwelling on speculations about the content of the committee report could lead to relapse into a very widespread violence in Asawase and its environs."

"We are therefore humbly calling on H.E the President and the Government at large to immediately order the release of the committee report to us to come to terms with its content and recommendations” he told MyNewsGh.com Ashanti Regional Correspondent.
