Ghanaian economist Professor Stephen Adei has criticized former President John Mahama's intention to renegotiate the IMF deal if re-elected.
Mahama expressed plans to alter the bailout terms and increase local ownership of oil and mining projects.
However, Prof Adei argued that Mahama's comments could undermine ongoing negotiations with external creditors, emphasizing that the real issue is Ghana's debt crisis, not the IMF.
He accused Mahama of appealing to public sentiment without considering the broader economic implications. Adei stressed that the IMF's role is limited and warned that jeopardizing the deal could worsen the country's financial problems.
