Security knew content of my bag - #OpenUGMC Campaigner

The final-year Pharmacy student of the University of Ghana, Reginald Sakyi Brown, who was arrested Wednesday for peacefully protesting the delays in opening the University of Ghana Medical Centre has said security at the function where the incident happened knew the content of his bag.

Sekyi-Brown, who is on a campaign to have the controversial UG Medical Centre opened for operation raised a placard bearing the inscription “Open UGMC Now” at a sod cutting event at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital being addressed by the first lady Rebecca Akufo-Addo.

He told Francis Abban on Morning Starr on Thursday, May 31 that he was told he was distracting the sod-cutting ceremony and had weapons in his bag.

“I noticed that the first lady has been dealing with challenges in the health sector and that was why I went to the grounds to draw her attention to the UGMC. I even left my bag close to the tripod of the cameraman at the sod cutting event and took just about three steps forward to show the placard to the First lady. I told the security to check my bag and it did not contain any dangerous weapon. I made it clear that I had just my laptop, iPad and iPhone in my bag. If those gadgets are what we call dangerous weapons, then I don’t know what to say”, Sekyi stressed.

The 25-year-old student, Reginald Sekyi-Brown, was arrested after he had moved from the audience holding a placard with the inscription: “#OPEN UGMC NOW” and stood close to the First Lady.

He was taken to the Korle Bu Police Station, interrogated and released on bail.
