Tackle galamsey head-on, not with mere rhetoric – Catholic Bishops to government

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has urged the government to take strong action against illegal mining, or galamsey, rather than just making empty promises.

In a statement, the Bishops called for the full enforcement of existing laws and accountability for those involved in illegal activities, highlighting the severe environmental and social damage caused by galamsey.

They emphasized the need for collective efforts from all sectors, including government, civil society, and religious leaders, to combat the crisis.

The Conference also suggested creating alternative livelihood programs and increasing public awareness about the negative impacts of illegal mining, while promoting responsible mining practices.
