Theodosiah Okoh honoured

The chiefs and people of Anum in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region have honoured Madam Theodosiah Salome Okoh, the designer of Ghana’s national flag.

A large bust of the nonagenarian was unveiled during a special ceremony to mark the Easter celebrations in Anum, where national award laureate hails from.

The ceremony was attended by a large crowd including school children waving miniature Ghana flags.

The honour was at the instance of the District Chief Executive of Asuogyaman District, Thomas Ampem Nyarko.

“I am happy that I have been able to initiate this and today we are seeing everybody in Asuogyaman being proud of what we pride ourselves in,” Mr. Nyarko told journalists.

Madam Okoh’s achievements including being a pioneer hockey administrator of the country were recounted by opinion leaders of Anum.

She has the national hockey stadium named after her.

“When you see something and you want to do it, sit down and think of how to do it,” Madam Okoh advised. “Don’t just do it with your mouth and then tell people that this is what I wanted to do. If you want to be an artist, keep it in your head and try to do.”

A citation in honour of Madam Okoh describes her as "a special breed who answers her nation's call. A common woman with uncommon desire to succeed. Remembered by posterity as the one who designed Ghana's pioneering flag."
