Thirty-Four prisoners sit for BECE 2024

This year, 34 male prisoners in Ghana are participating in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) with 27 juveniles from the Senior Correctional Centre, 5 from Nsawam Maximum Security Prison, and 2 from Sunyani Central Prison.

The inmates have been prepared by qualified teachers in the prison service and the Ghana Education Service.

The Greater Accra Regional Public Relations Officer is optimistic about the inmates' success but highlights challenges such as inadequate teaching materials.

The inmates are requesting donations of textbooks and past questions to aid their studies.

The Ghana Prisons Service introduced formal education to inmates on a pilot basis at the Senior Correctional Centre in 2007 to facilitate their reintegration.

In past years, inmates have achieved 100% pass rates in the BECE.
