Speaker of Parliament Alban Bagbin has criticized legislators for increasingly turning to the Supreme Court to address parliamentary disputes, a trend he says weakens Parliament’s authority.
Speaking at a press conference on November 6, 2024, he expressed concern over Majority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin’s recent injunction application regarding a parliamentary seats dispute, calling it an example of MPs undermining their own institution.
Bagbin urged lawmakers to prioritize resolving issues within Parliament through dialogue and compromise, emphasizing that frequent appeals to the judiciary reflect poorly on Parliament’s independence and erode public respect for it.
