Trending GH: How some residents of Accra celebrated Ghana's 63rd Independence Day

Ghana's capital, Accra, has for the second successive time missed out on hosting the official Independence Day Parade with this year’s celebrations being held in the Ashanti Regional capital, Kumasi.

That notwithstanding, some persons in the capital are making good use of the holiday by visiting beaches, tourists sites, amusement parks, among others to celebrate this special occasion.

On today’s Independence Day edition of Trending Gh, we caught up with some people who had visited the Labadi Beach in Accra to celebrate the holiday. One thing was commonplace, they were in to have the fun of their lives and also break away from their daily stress.

“Seeing the environment here today, I am very excited. The tourism ministry is doing well and they should keep it up. Ghana is celebrating 63 years of Independence; it is a day to celebrate,” says a resident of Accra.

“ My holiday is going good, it has helped me take off some stress. I just came here to swim and have some fun,” says Christiana, a visitor at the Labadi beach. “Some people came here for vacation, some to swim. The holiday is going well,” says a young man at the Labadi beach.



Despite the celebrations, some citizens who were not satisfied with the country’s level of development after 63 years of Independence charged the government to do more.

“Ghana’s economy is low, with all our timber and gold we still borrow money from other countries. President Nana Akufo-Addo is doing his best but his officials are corrupt,” he said.

“There is more to be done. Our leaders need to put in some measures to make sure the tax-payers money is being used wisely,” a resident from Accra told GhanaWeb.
