Tsatsu Tsikata cautions against public distrust as Judiciary seen to favor NPP

Prominent lawyer Tsatsu Tsikata has expressed concern over growing public distrust in Ghana’s judiciary, following a report by the Mo Ibrahim Foundation showing a 30% decline in perceived impartiality from 2017 to 2023.

The report highlights issues around judicial independence and appointments, with National Security Minister Albert Kan Dapaah cautioning that citizens could lose faith in the courts, leading them to seek justice outside the legal system.

In an interview, Tsikata warned that perceived favoritism towards the New Patriotic Party (NPP) damages the judiciary’s credibility, noting that citizens now jokingly refer to it as a “unanimous football club” backing one side.

He urged the judiciary to restore balanced public confidence to maintain national stability.
