A serious case of academic fraud may have been uncovered at the University of Winneba (UEW).
At the centre of the storm is a lecturer who teaches contract, partnership and company law, originally courses designed to be taught by persons with professional law qualifications.
Salifu Alhassan Bawa, referred to as lawyer by most of his students may have come to the end of the road, as a strong worded petition has been presented to the National Accreditation Board, questioning his eligibility to teach the courses he has been assigned by the university to teach.
Our source gathered that despite all the allegations against the lecturer, including his constant habit of dragging the name of University into the mud with series of vile publications in the media, the varsity management has continued to shield him.
Following the petition, reactions have poured with typical students’ anger and a demand for an investigation of the scandal.
“School authorities must be interested in this matter. We can’t have a lecturer, with some credibility deficit teaching such courses. If his qualification falls short of the university’s requirements, he must be shown the exit. There are a lot more qualified persons who can teach the course. We as students are scandalized by this development and we will pursue this matter until school authorities are moved to act” an SRC executive told our correspondent in Winneba.
Challenging the NAB to act on the matter the petitioner, Eric Dawda said;
“I write as an alumnus of the University of education,Winneba to officially file a complaint to your esteem office in view of the ostensible mandate of the National Accreditation Board pursuant to Act 2007 (Act 744)
The National Accreditation Board by law is responsible for the accreditation of both public and private institutions as regards the contents and standard of their programmes”
According to him, upon credible intelligence he had gathered and having gone through the academic details of Alhassan Salifu Bawa, it was established that he has no professional qualification as well as the needed academic qualification in respect of the courses he has been assigned to teach at the University of Education, Winneba.
He stated categorically that “Contract law as well as company and partnership law are courses that require professional qualification as a requirement. It is, therefore, sad to note that Alhassan Salifu Bawa who is currently teaching these courses has not been called to the Bar, he has been assigned to teach these courses in clear breach of accreditation standards”.
He argued that Bawa’s qualification falls short of the requirements, particularly the course that he has been assigned to teach and if this blatant error committed by the University is not cured with immediate effect, it would have a serious effect on innocent students who are going to suffer the consequence of his unprofessionalism.
