Minister for Communications and Digitalisation Ursula Owusu-Ekuful has confirmed that NextGen InfraCo, awarded the 5G rollout contract, was established just a week before receiving it.
This company was specifically created for the 5G rollout as no existing neutral infrastructure company could handle it.
At a press briefing, Owusu-Ekuful explained the government's decision to avoid auctioning the contract due to setbacks from the 4G rollout, which achieved only 15% penetration since 2015.
The government aims to expedite the 5G rollout by directly awarding the contract to ensure a dedicated infrastructure company manages the deployment effectively and timely.
