Read full articleall across the country participating, was climaxed today at the National Theatre with 2016 reigning champions Adisadel College and first-time contenders West Africa Senior High School competing with two-time winners St. Peter’s for this year’s bragging right.
The five-round competition, backed by a massive show of support from both old and current students of the various schools who had thronged the venue, saw the Santaclusians of Adisco pulling 22 points, St Peter’s following with 21 points and WASS in the third position with 17 points at the end of the first round.
Still maintaining, their comfortable lead through round two and three, Adisco represented by Jeffrey Quaye and Gabriel Ampadu Sasu ended that stage of the competition also known as the “Problem of the day” with 29 points, with St Peter’s represented by Kissi Annoh Kwaku and Fenny Benjamin still trailing behind with 26points and WASS represented by Arkoh Sahene and Tade Abdul Hameed in third place with 25points.
It was at the fourth stage also known as the “True or False” round that Adisco was overthrown by WASS. Scoring an impressive 41points, WASS was clearly in the run for the cup, with Adisco giving up hope of winning the trophy.
In the final stage of the competition, St. Peter’s answered two out of the four riddles set for the finals, giving them the push they needed over Adisco who had earlier failed to answer three questions correct at the “True or false” stage.
The contest ended with St. Peter's SHS leading with 45 points, West Africa SHS in second place with 44points and Adisadel College in third place with 39points.
Speaking to ghanaweb at the end of the competition, the representatives of St. Peter’s who were still overwhelmed by their win, expressed their gratitude to God and their teachers for their successful outcome.
According to the boys from Nkwatia, although the beginning was gloomy, they were hopeful of emerging winners and confident of lifting the trophy.
“This was exciting. All the rounds were not easy and sometimes you are not sure. But we still had to keep our cool and stay focus. We are happy about this win and we are so grateful to God,’’ Kissi Annoh Kwaku said.
For emerging tops, St Peter’s SHS was awarded a cash prize of GH¢40,000 from the Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) and the Ghana Education Service (GES).
Their teachers also received GH¢15,000 and the three contestants were also presented with a cash prize of GH¢15,000 each and certificates of participation.
ST. peter’s also received cash gifts from Bond Savings and Loan and GCB Bank, a scholarship from Lancaster University Ghana and a full year medical scholarship from the Accra College of Medicine for one participant.
For placing second, WASS received a cash prize of GH¢30,000 while their teachers were presented a GH¢10,000 cash prize. The three contestants were presented with GH¢10,000 each and other gift prizes from GCB Bank and Bond Savings and loans.
On their part, Adisadel College received a cash prize of GH¢20,000, while the teachers received GH¢5,000. The three contestants were presented a cash price of GH¢2,500 each and other cash prizes from Bond Savings and Loans and GCB Bank.
The Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong who is also an old student of the school gave the contestants Gh 10,000 to be shared for honoring the school.
