The New Patriotic Party has indicated the party has started an internal enquiry into an alleged assault incident involving one of their own members, Hajia Fati and an Adom FM journalist.
Hajia Fati is reported to have assaulted the journalist Friday, May 4, at the NPP headquarters in Accra, when the journalist went there to cover picking of party’s nomination forms.
The incident has angered a section of the public especially those within the media fraternity most of whom condemned the act and are demanding justice for the victim.
The Ghana Journalist Association and the Media Foundation for West Africa among other interest groups have all condemned the act, with the GJA threatening a legal action against Hajia Fati.
But the party says while internal enquires are ongoing, it will also continue to cooperate with other agencies that are investigating the matter.
A statement under the signature of the acting General Secretary, John Boadu, condemns the attacks and distances the party from the act.
The party stated, “it respects and cherishes the role of the media as partners in development and does not condone any action intended to suppress press freedom.”
The statement further urged journalists not to "feel intimidated and must continue to discharge his/her duties without fear”.
