The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has assured its preparedness to conduct elections in the conflict-prone Bawku Central constituency despite ongoing security concerns.
This follows fears that the December 7, 2024, polls could be disrupted by the area’s unrest.
Upper East Regional EC Director, William Obeng Adarkwa, stated that the Commission is closely working with security agencies to ensure peaceful elections.
He appealed to residents to maintain calm to facilitate the safe deployment of election materials and officials.
Tensions in Bawku have escalated since rival chief Seidu Abagre’s return, following a court decision overturning his arrest warrant.
The chieftaincy dispute has led to deadly clashes, disrupted essential services, and forced schools to close. A curfew is in place as authorities seek to restore order.
