The Sege District Police Command has arrested a 46-year old woman, for allegedly possessing 12 wrapped substances suspected to be Indian Hemp and one piece of compressed dried narcotic leaves.
Belinda Sorgbordjor, the Police said, was the wife of a popular “wee” peddler known in the town as "Alale".
Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) George Aboagye, Sege District Commander, confirming the arrest to the Ghana News Agency, said he had received several calls from people pleading with him to release the suspect.
DSP Aboagye alleged that anytime such persons were arrested, traditional and community opinion leaders, as well as some politicians in the area, put pressure on the Police to release the suspects adding however that his outfit would ensure that criminals were punished by the law.
He added that such leaders in the community proceed to court bail the suspected criminals when the police refused to release them adding that for instance, Sorgbordjor’s husband who was once arrested was bailed by the leaders some few days after his arrest.
"Whenever we arrest people as police, prominent people in the community like chiefs, elders and even top political leaders will be calling in to let go of them, if we fail to listen, they follow the case to court and bail the people then the community members accuse us of being in bed with the criminals, "he said.
The suspect, he noted, would be arraigned before court while investigations continue.
