World Mental Health Day: Psychiatric hospitals in Ghana in very bad states – Abena Korkor

The Project Coordinator of the Mental Society of Ghana, Abena Korkor, has bemoaned the unpleasant state of the three major psychiatric hospitals in the country.

She called for funding for these facilities.

“We have just three main psychiatric institutions and they are really underfunded, I have had the opportunity to go through all three, Accra Psychiatric hospital, Pantang is going through some renovations, but there is still a lot to be done, Ankaful too is not in a great state. All three of them have problems when it comes to supply of medications, supply of food, and infrastructure itself,” she said.

Abena Korkor revealed that it is difficult to spend long hours at the facilities because of the current state they are in.

“It’s not somewhere you would want to spend like an hour or two even at. When it comes to our wards, they are over-crowded,” she remarked.
