The African continent will once again be brought to life when Egypt welcomes the continent for this year’s historic African Cup of Nations.
The land of pyramids will kick off the football fiesta on June 21 against a very determined side from Zimbabwe.
The tournament to be hosted in Egypt is historic in several aspects and promises to be one of the most exciting AFCONs ever.
It is the first time the AFCON will be played with 24 teams. Follow the #2019AFCONABC updates for explanations and insights into how this is so and why the increase was introduced.
Additionally, Egypt is hosting the AFCON for the fifth time. The last time Egypt hosted the trophy, in 2006, they won it. This catapulted them to win two subsequent AFCONs in Ghana in 2008, and Angola in 2010, making history in the process. To know which teams they played and what other accolades they won in their conquest of the continent, join the daily updates #2019AFCONABC.
Another piece of history worth noting is the hosting period for this year’s AFCON. Tradition was that the tournament was played in the first quarter of the year (between January-April), however, there has been a drastic shift with the new normal being mid-year. #2019AFCONABC will bring you these and more on a daily basis to keep you well informed.
Two teams will qualify from the group stage, with the third best placed team from the groups to make up the teams for the Round of 16. #2019AFCONABC will give you detailed explanation on the changes to expect in this year’s AFCON.
