Black Stars coach, Charles Akonnor has praised midfielder Mubarak Wakaso for powering the team to the top of the table with his solitary strike against Ethiopia in the 2022 World Cup Qualifier.

The Black Stars of Ghana started their 2022 World Cup Qualifying campaign against the Walia Antelopes of Ethiopia at the Cape Coast Stadium on Friday, September 3, 2021.

A 'baby' strike from Wakaso in the 35th minute was all that Ghana needed to beat an Ethiopian side that looked well composed and organized.

An ecstatic C.K. Akonnor who could not hide his admiration and joy for winning the game swiftly jumped to congratulate Wakaso for the effort that led to the goal.

“I congratulate Wakaso for scoring that goal. He saw the goalkeeper was weak and he shot and got the goal. I congratulate him,” Mr Akonnor said at the post-match press briefing.

Ghana will take on the Bafana Bafana of South Africa in the second group game on Monday at the FNB Stadium in Soccer City, Johannesburg.

The Black Stars are currently on top of the group with 3 points ahead of South Africa and Zimbabwe who shared the spoils on Friday, while Ethiopia languishes at the bottom.
