Ghana midfielder Michael Essien says football is currently in a terrible state in the country.

This comes after all activities related to football were put on hold by the government following an investigation by undercover journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas in June, which exposed corrupt practices by football administrators and referees.

“It’s a very sad and a shameful situation [with regards to] what is happening to football in Ghana,” Essien was quoted as saying by GhanaWeb

“Now, we just have to look forward and resolve the shambolic situation the Football Association finds itself in and hopefully they can get back to work and give these local players the chance to play.

“That is what they do for a living and now they are doing nothing which is quite hard for them. I hope they can resolve the issue for them to get back to work as soon as possible,” he added.

Essien, who has obtained a Uefa B coaching license, is currently on holidays in Ghana after parting ways with Indonesian top-flight Persib Bandung.

He featured for Liberty Professionals in Ghana Premier League before moving abroad.
