Glittering opening ceremony kicks off AWCON 2018

The 2018 African Women’s Cup of Nations officially got underway on Saturday, November 17, at the Accra Sports Stadium, with a surreal opening ceremony before Ghana beat Algeria by 1-0 in the first match.

There were huge doubts as to whether Ghana would be up to hosting the AWCON but, with the evidence of the opening ceremony, the country seemed to be off to a fairly good start.

The opening ceremony gave youngsters to showcase acrobatics, cultural display and musical performances by Bamboo Centre group, led by Chief Moomen.

Ghanaian Afro pop singer, Noella Wiyaala, together with gospel musician, Grace Ashy, performed the official theme song for the tournament titled “We Are Champions” to thrill fans who thronged the Accra Sports Stadium to witness the opening ceremony.

The two-week long tournament would see eight nations compete in 16 games.

There were no complaints at the 45,000 Accra Sports Stadium during the opening ceremony as Ghanaian soccer fans enjoyed competitive football after many weeks of football hunger.

The 11th Africa Women’s Cup of Nations would run from 17 November- 1 December in Accra and Cape Coast.

The tournament would also serve as a qualifier for the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in France.
