Over 20 shops closed in Uganda's Tororo over flouting coronavirus standard operating procedures

Over 20 shops in Tororo, a town in Uganda have been closed for allegedly flouting the standard operating procedures (SOPs) meant to contain the spread of coronavirus disease.

The district coronavirus task force closed the shops on Monday afternoon in an operation led by Tororo district deputy resident district commissioner (RDC) Yahaya and acting Tororo district police commander (DPC), Kasim Matovu.

We explained that the crackdown was meant to enforce the president’s directives issued in his nationwide address on Sunday night. The shops were accused of lacking handwashing/sanitizer facilities, failing to implement social distancing among other measures.

In a similar incident, Butaleja district RDC Stanley Bayooles also led an operation to crack down on businesses and people flouting coronavirus SOPs.

The police-backed operations mainly took place in Busolwe market where two video halls were found operating contrary to the presidential directives banning any kind of social gatherings.

The team confiscated equipment found in the two video halls after their operators ran away. The team also impounded taxis that were found carrying beyond the stipulated number of passengers. At least 1,026 new cases were confirmed the 7,296 conducted on June 5 raising the total cumulative cases to 53,961.
