AU statement 'ordering' Guinea-Bissau soldiers to 'stop coup'

The African Union on February 1, 2022, issued a statement on political developments in Guinea-Bissau following reports of an attempted coup.

The statement noted that the AU Commission chair was deeply concerned with the situation, he also asked soldiers to return to the barracks and release all detained persons.

The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, follows with deep concern the situation in Guinea Bissau, marked by the attempted coup d’état against the Government of the country.

He calls upon the military to return, without delay, to their barracks and to ensure the physical integrity of President Umaro Sissoco Embalo and members of his Government and to immediately release those among them in detention.
