Botswana ruling party rejected after 58 years in power

Voters in Botswana have decisively rejected the ruling Botswana Democratic Party (BDP) in a significant political shift.

The BDP, in power since the country's independence in 1966, has only secured one parliamentary seat in early results, while the opposition Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC), led by Duma Boko, has won 25 seats and is projected to secure a majority in parliament.

President Mokgweetsi Masisi has accepted the defeat, acknowledging a "massive" loss for the BDP and expressing commitment to a smooth transition.
