The U.S. is advocating for two permanent United Nations Security Council seats for African nations and one rotating seat for small island developing states.
This push is part of efforts to strengthen ties with Africa and Pacific Islands amidst geopolitical tensions.
U.S. Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield will announce this plan, aiming to advance Security Council reform as part of President Biden's legacy.
While the U.S. supports expanding the council, it does not back extending veto power beyond the current five permanent members.
Reform discussions have been ongoing for years, but progress remains uncertain.
