A fuel tanker explosion in northern Nigeria has killed at least 104 people who rushed to collect leaking petrol after the truck overturned in Jigawa state.

The crash occurred late Tuesday night in the town of Majia, where police had cordoned off the area but couldn't stop the crowd from gathering.

Over 100 others were injured, with many in critical condition.

The driver, unharmed, is in custody for questioning.

Rescue efforts are ongoing, and a mass burial is planned. Fuel tanker accidents are common in Nigeria due to poor road conditions and vehicle maintenance.
