Former world under-20 athletics champion Kipyegon Bett has died at age 26 in Bomet, Kenya, following a brief illness.
Bett, who won the 800m world junior title in 2016 and bronze at the 2017 World Championships, was handed a four-year doping ban in 2018, which derailed his career.
His sister, Purity Kirui, shared that he had been suffering from stomach pains for a month and was recently hospitalized.
Athletics Kenya described Bett as a talented athlete whose career struggled post-ban. His passing has renewed discussions about the long-term impact of doping on athletes' well-being.
