Further restrictions would hamper development - Mozambican president

The Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, today, Tuesday, August 3 considered that imposing more restrictions on the prevention of covid-19 would further delay the country's development, calling for compliance with the measures in force.

“We do not want to continue confining, that this is interrupting development,” even in the current scenario of more deaths, hospitalizations, and infections, said Nyusi, in statements reproduced by the public broadcaster Rádio Moçambique.

The Mozambican head of state made a vehement appeal to the Mozambican population to strictly respect the covid-19 prevention measures.

“Please do not interrupt the country's development,” emphasized Filipe Nyusi.

"More than a year after the first covid-19 case was registered, no one in Mozambique can point out the lack of knowledge of pandemic prevention measures to justify a permissive behavior in relation to the disease," Nyusi said.

Living in the middle of the third wave, the country has the highest covid-19 positivity rate on the African continent, now standing at 16.7%, according to the weekly epidemiological analysis released on Monday by the Ministry of Health.

Mozambique accounts for an accumulated total of 1,479 deaths and 124,962 cases, of which 76% recovered from the disease and 501 were hospitalized.

The main Mozambican cities are under curfew, education is suspended and commerce, restaurants, and services operate with very limited hours, opening only during the day, as part of measures to combat the pandemic.
