Guinea's military junta have agreed to imminently release ousted president, Alpha Conde, who has been in detention since September 5.
This was disclosed by ECOWAS Chairperson and president of Ghana Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in his address to the 76th United Nations General Assembly in New York on Wednesday, September 22.

"That is why both Guinea and Mali, foundation members of the Community, have been suspended from its organisation, pending the restoration of democratic governance. We welcome the support of the United Nations for the measures taken.
"ECOWAS has given Guinea six (6) months to do so, and requested the immediate release of President Alpha Conde. On my visit to Conakry last Friday, the military leaders indicated their willingness to see to his imminent release, and it is our hope that they will keep to their word," he said.
Akufo-Addo and his Ivorian president Alassane Ouattara were in Conakry a week ago to meet the junta and formally communicate sanctions of ECOWAS imposed as a result of the coup.
The duo met with Conde who they say was doing well but according to a diplomat, they failed to secure his release and exile to Ivory Coast.
