Kenya plans to restrict the direct export of valuable minerals in raw form while constructing a Sh5.8 billion gold processing plant, set to complete by mid-next year.
This facility will initially process gold, gemstones, and granite, marking a shift towards local value addition.
Other African nations have already implemented similar restrictions to enhance local processing and increase economic benefits.
Stakeholders emphasize the need for caution, noting that export bans do not guarantee automatic benefits, as some countries have abandoned such policies soon after implementation due to infrastructural challenges.
