Kenya president pledges 'broad-based' cabinet amid crisis

Kenya's President William Ruto has announced a plan to form a new "broad-based government" after weeks of deadly protests against an unpopular tax bill.

Six of the 11 proposed ministers were from the recently dismissed cabinet. Ruto, reflecting on the crisis, emphasized the opportunity ahead for Kenya.

Protests, initially sparked by tax increases, continued with calls for Ruto's resignation. Following the cabinet's dismissal, Kenya's police chief resigned amid accusations of police brutality.

The proposed ministers must be approved by the National Assembly before appointment.

Ruto's announcement aimed to address the ongoing unrest and demands from predominantly young protesters.
