Kenyan MPs vote to impeach deputy president

Kenyan MPs have overwhelmingly voted to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over corruption allegations and claims of ethnic divisiveness.

The National Assembly passed an 11-charge motion with 281 votes for and 44 against, marking Gachagua as the first deputy president in Kenya to be impeached.

He denies wrongdoing, claiming the accusations are propaganda and asserting his innocence.

The Senate will decide on his ousting.

Tensions are high in Kenya, where public dissatisfaction with the rising cost of living has escalated.

Security was tightened in Nairobi ahead of the vote amid ongoing political strife.
