Kenyan president faces tough choices after day of bloodshed

Following a day of violent protests, Kenyan President William Ruto addressed the nation, condemning the "hijacking" of legitimate protests by organized criminals.

He vowed to use all means to prevent further violence. The protests against a controversial finance bill led to the deaths of at least five people and injuries to hundreds.

Despite widespread unrest and significant damage, including the burning of Nairobi's city hall and parliament, Ruto did not yield to demands to abandon the bill. Instead, he emphasized the necessity of the taxes to manage Kenya's $80bn debt and avoid default.

The situation remains tense, with continued opposition from a youth-led movement.
