Mozambique’s ruling party, Frelimo, has won the presidential election, extending its 49-year rule despite allegations of rigging and violence.
Daniel Chapo, Frelimo’s candidate, secured 71% of the vote, replacing outgoing President Filipe Nyusi.
Chapo, 47, will be the first president born after independence.
His closest rival, Venancio Mondlane, received 20%, sparking protests across the country.
Opposition candidate Ossufo Momade came in third.
Despite allegations of electoral fraud, Frelimo also won 195 out of 250 parliamentary seats.
The election was marred by killings and a heavy police crackdown on protests.
