Suspected fraudsters have hacked the WhatsApp account of Umo Eno, governor of Nigeria's Akwa Ibom state, and used it to solicit money from his contacts.
The governor’s chief press secretary confirmed the account was cloned and warned the public to disregard any financial requests from the number.
The incident mirrors a recent similar breach involving Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke.
Cybersecurity experts advise using additional security measures like email linking and app locks to protect against such breaches.
Despite efforts and investments in cyber-crime prevention, fraud remains a significant issue in Nigeria.
