South African Airways bounces back, commences regional operations soon

South African Airways (SAA) is expected to restart operations in the coming weeks after its administrators filed a notice of “substantial implementation” of a business rescue plan with South Africa’s Companies and Intellectual Property Commission.

AviationGhana sources say there is now an “internal planning to restart regional Africa operations” in the coming weeks.

The South Africa-based carrier, after 17months, exited a local form of bankruptcy protection called a business rescue last Friday.

According to the administrators, SAA is now solvent, adding that they had “effectively discharged the business rescue and handed over the operations of SAA back to its board and executive team.”

South African Airways is the state-owned flag carrier airline of South Africa and headquartered in Airways Park at O. R. Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg.

At its peak, the airline operated a hub-and-spoke network, linking over 40 local and international destinations across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America, and Oceania. However, administrative, boardroom and financial challenges forced the airline into administration.
