Tanzania police commander transferred over sex work comment

A police commander in Dodoma, Tanzania, has been removed from her position after making controversial remarks linking an alleged gang-rape victim to sex work.

The comments by Dodoma Regional Commander Theopista Mallya, suggesting the victim was involved in sex work, sparked public outrage and accusations of minimizing the assault.

Following the backlash, the national police force apologized and announced Mallya's transfer.

The four suspects in the case, who deny the charges, appeared in court on Monday.

The video of the alleged assault, which has gone viral, has further fueled anger and calls for justice.
