Tanzanian artist who burned president's picture jailed

A Tanzanian portrait artist, who was accused of burning a photo of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, has been sentenced to two years in prison or a fine of $2,000 (£1,600) after being found guilty of cybercrimes.

His arrest sparked controversy, with some lawyers arguing no laws were broken. Police cited his use of offensive language and his dissemination of offensive content.

Chaula admitted to the crime and did not defend himself in court. Critics argue the sentence is harsh and reflects a crackdown on dissent, despite recent reforms under President Hassan aimed at opening political and civic spaces.
