Comedian-turned-politician Michael Usi has been sworn in as Malawi’s vice-president, replacing Saulos Chilima, who died in a plane crash.
Usi, 55, received a standing ovation at his inauguration and promised to honor his predecessor’s memory. His appointment has divided Malawians; some question his suitability due to his acting career, while others praise the decision.
Known as “Manganya” from a popular TV sitcom, Usi has a clinical medicine background and a PhD in youth development.
He was previously Malawi’s minister of tourism and later, natural resources. Usi pledged to unite his party and honor Chilima’s legacy.
