Winnie Byanyima, wife of Ugandan opposition figure Kizza Besigye, has alleged that her husband was kidnapped in Nairobi, Kenya, on November 16, 2024, during a book launch and is now being held in a military prison in Kampala.

Byanyima, who serves as the executive director of UNAIDS, demanded his immediate release, questioning why Besigye, a civilian, is being detained in a military jail.

The 68-year-old Besigye, a former personal doctor to President Yoweri Museveni, has been a long-time opposition leader, contesting four presidential elections against Museveni.

The Uganda army has confirmed Besigye's detention, but his exact whereabouts remain unclear, and his family is calling for access to him.
