350,000 Ghanaians to benefit from Pokuase Bulk Supply Project

Some 350,000 Ghanaians are expected to benefit from the Pokuase Bulk Supply Project (BSP) under the Ghana Power Compact programme to improve the quality of power transmission.

According to the Chief Operating Officer at the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA), Julius Kwame Kpekpena, the project is expected to significantly address unavailable and unreliable power supply in the northern parts of Accra.

“The project, as part of the Ghana Power Compact will address technical and commercial losses to allow Ghanaian consumers to pay less for electricity supply and we’re interested in making sure that GRIDCO and ECG are able to reduce these losses in the network.”

“This project is costing us about US$60 million dollars and we're hoping that 350,000 people will benefit directly from this project with the entire economy also to benefit,” he explained.

Julius Kwame Kpekpena made this known during a media briefing before a site visit of the Pokuase Bulk Supply Point in Accra on Thursday, November 28.



Kwame Kpekpena, however, disclosed that the project is expected to be completed by March 2021 where areas such as Pokuase, Kwabenya, Legon, Nsawam and other surrounding communities will have reliable power supply.

MP for Trobu, Moses Anim in his remarks said he expects quality work to be executed and a proper maintenance culture ensured after the project is completed to benefit future generations.

“We are expecting a quality scope of work to be done and that after the project has been handed over, a maintenance culture will be there for this project to span its lifetime for all to benefit,” he said.



Pokuase Bulk Supply Project (A4BSP)

Earlier this year, the sod was cut for work to begin on the first phase of the largest power Bulk Supply Point at Pokuase in Accra.

The project is estimated to have a total capacity of 580 megavolt amperes (MVA) comprising four 330/34.5 kilovolts (KV) and one 145 volt-amperes (VA) power transformers.

The contractor for the project is Elecnor S.A. of Spain, with SMEC International PTY Limited as project engineers.

The construction of the BSP is being funded by the United States (US) government through the Millennium Challenge Corporation (MCC) under the US$498.2 million Ghana Power Compact Two programme and implemented by the Millennium Development Authority (MiDA).
