Australia plans to introduce legislation banning social media access for children under 16 to reduce online harm. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced that the proposed law, expected in Parliament soon, aims to protect young Australians and reassure parents of their children's safety online.
The legislation will hold social media platforms accountable for enforcing the age limit, with no exceptions for parental consent, and Australia's eSafety Commissioner will oversee enforcement.
While the law would take effect 12 months after passage, experts remain divided on its potential impact.
Critics argue a ban might delay exposure rather than educate children on safe digital navigation, with organizations like the Australian Child Rights Taskforce advocating for regulated safety standards instead.
Supporters, however, cite mental health concerns, stating that excessive social media use harms developing brains. Albanese defended the ban, emphasizing the influence of powerful tech algorithms on vulnerable youth.
