Africa's internet user base has surged to 646 million, a major increase from 181 million in 2014, with Nigeria and Egypt making up nearly a third of users.
Internet accessibility has become more affordable as data costs dropped from $12.44 per GB in 2010 to $1.57 in 2020, with Nigeria offering the lowest price at $0.38 per GB as of early 2024.
Globally, the average data used per smartphone is expected to rise from 15 GB per month in 2022 to 46 GB by 2028, driven by video streaming and AI app use. Africa's internet user base may reach 1.1 billion by 2029.
