Energy sector not advancing enough – ACEP

Benjamin Boakye, Executive Director of the Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP), voiced concerns about Ghana's energy sector. The sector struggles to meet demand, and a 150-megawatt power shortfall causes load shedding, or “Dumsor.”

On Joy FM, he highlighted that the sector’s lack of robustness and poor management contribute to frequent outages and low voltage issues.

Boakye criticized power providers for inadequate public communication about load sharing, stressing the need for transparency to protect businesses from unanticipated power disruptions.

He also noted financial mismanagement within the sector, pointing out that the Ministry of Finance should not bear the burden of unpaid electricity bills, which impacts the sector’s financial stability.

The instability has disrupted industries and consumers, with ACEP advocating for transparency and accountability in addressing the power crisis.
