Professor Charles Ackah of the University of Ghana’s Economics Department has criticized Ghanaian agricultural policymakers for the country's heavy reliance on imports despite its fertile land.
Speaking on ChannelOne TV, Prof. Ackah highlighted the lack of serious investment in agriculture, citing only the late President Kutu Acheampong's efforts as commendable.
He condemned the importation of basic foods and the government's failure to support agricultural research and development, warning that a lack of food sovereignty poses significant national security risks.
Ackah called for a renewed focus on achieving self-sufficiency in food production to ensure Ghana's food security.
