The General Agriculture Workers Union (GAWU) predicts continued food price hikes in the coming months, despite government interventions.

The Ghana Statistical Service reported a rise in inflation to 21.5% in September 2024, driven by food inflation surging to 22.1%.

Edward Kareweh of GAWU attributes this to challenges like illegal mining (galamsey) and a dry spell, which are hindering food production.

He warns that if these issues persist, food inflation will rise further through early 2025, impacting national inflation and food security.

Galamsey’s destruction of farmlands and water bodies remains a major concern.
