Local manufacturers in Ghana have opposed a 5% excise tax on locally produced plastic products, arguing that it will harm businesses and worsen living conditions for consumers.
The tax was introduced by the government as part of efforts to manage plastic waste, alongside a 10% Environmental Excise Tax on selected plastic materials at entry ports.
The Ghana Plastic Manufacturers Association has expressed concern over the lack of consultation regarding the tax.
They fear that passing on the increased costs to consumers would make locally manufactured products more expensive than imports, hindering their competitiveness.
The association has called for the immediate suspension of the tax and a broader consultation on the issue.
