Only about 1.5m tax payers out of 7.9m honour their obligations

Only about 1.5 million of Ghana's 7.9 million registered taxpayers actually pay taxes, revealed Deputy Finance Minister Dr. Alex Ampaabeng at the World Bank's 8th Ghana Economic Update launch.

The government, with the Ghana Revenue Authority, is cleaning the tax database to increase revenue.

Dr. Ampaabeng emphasized reducing human interaction in tax collection and enhancing digital methods to curb tax infractions. Ghana’s tax collection, averaging 13.2% of GDP between 2017 and 2021, falls short of the Sub-Saharan Africa average and the country's potential of 21.2%.

Addressing inefficiencies could ensure macroeconomic stability and support sustainable growth and poverty reduction.
